Challenge #3: fitness testing

Testing together makes the hard parts more fun.

So far in the Kilter Metrics Challenge, we’ve measured ourselves and gotten lab tests; this last part of the program is a physical test — actually a few of them — to find out how fit we are.

These tests measure flexibility, agility, balance, endurance, and strength in different muscle groups: core, upper body, and lower body. You can do them in about 30 minutes if you have a measuring tape and a stopwatch. Download the Home Fitness Test booklet and scoring sheet to do it yourself at home.

Eight of us from the Fitness Challenge group gathered in Cubbon Park on Sunday and did the exercise tests together. It was a bit muddy after the rains this week, but lots of fun as we counted and timed our performance and cheered each other on.

The most interesting part of the activity for me was seeing how everyone had at least one area that stood out that they could be pleased about, and one that wasn’t so strong and pointed out an area to work on.

Metrics are not a competition and there’s no need for comparison to others or even for judging yourself harshly. It’s about knowledge.

My results for the fitness tests

I was surprised that I have “elite” balance. My good score in the squat test made me go home and double check the scoring system (it is correct, so now I am wondering about my form during the test). I expected my flexibility to be better. Since four strength tests scored average, I can see where there is room for improvement.

And that’s the point of the metrics challenge. By knowing where we start, we will know when we make progress.
