When you start reading labels on a hunt for added sugars, you might be surprised at how many ingredients are actually sugar in disguise. Sure, there’s “sugar” but there’s also cane sugar, beet sugar, and grape sugar.

Here’s a list of names you might see:

  • Agave nectar
  • Barley malt
  • Beet sugar
  • Brown rice syrup
  • Brown sugar
  • Cane crystals
  • Cane juice
  • Cane sugar
  • Caramel syrup
  • Coconut sugar
  • Coconut palm sugar
  • Corn sweetener
  • Corn syrup
  • Date sugar
  • Dehydrated cane juice
  • Dehydrated fruit juice
  • Dextrin
  • Dextrose
  • Evaporated cane juice
  • Fructose
  • Fruit juice concentrate
  • Glucose
  • Golden syrup
  • Grape sugar
  • Gur
  • High-fructose corn syrup
  • Honey
  • Invert sugar
  • Jaggery
  • Kuromitsu
  • Lactose
  • Maltodextrin
  • Malt syrup
  • Maltose
  • Maple syrup
  • Modified corn starch
  • Molasses
  • Palm sugar
  • Raw sugar
  • Rice syrup
  • Saccharose
  • Sorghum syrup
  • Sucrose
  • Syrup
  • Treacle
  • Turbinado sugar

This is not an exhaustive list. Food manufacturers find new ways to describe their ingredients to the point that in 2012 the USDA removed the “USDA Database for the Added Sugars Content of Selected Foods” citing the difficulty in analyzing the data.

Fortunately, a quick Google search undertaken in aisles of your grocery store will clear up any confusion before you buy.
